Rainy Day Ideas on the Llŷn Peninsula

Discover attractions, cafés & cosy days out whatever the weather

Rain is all part of the charm of North Wales.

A passing shower can transform the landscape, bringing dramatic skies, mist rolling across the hills and cosy afternoons that are every bit as memorable as sunny beach days.

Fortunately, the Llŷn Peninsula and surrounding area offer plenty to enjoy whatever the weather. From heritage railways and castles to independent cafés, galleries and family attractions, there's no shortage of ways to spend a relaxing day before returning to the comfort of Tyn y Big Estate.

Ride the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway

Perfect for: Families • Railway enthusiasts • Scenic days out

One of North Wales' most iconic experiences, the Ffestiniog Railway takes you on a spectacular journey through mountains, forests and valleys aboard beautifully restored heritage steam trains.

Even on a rainy day, there's something magical about watching the scenery drift past from the comfort of a warm carriage as clouds wrap themselves around the hills.

If you're travelling with children, the experience is just as exciting for them as it is for adults.

It's one of our favourite rainy-day adventures.

Zip World Llechwedd

Perfect for: Families • Older children • Adventure seekers

Just outside Blaenau Ffestiniog, Zip World Llechwedd is home to one of North Wales' most unique underground attractions.

Descend into the historic slate caverns to discover Bounce Below, an enormous network of underground trampolines, slides and tunnels suspended inside the old mine.

There's also Zip World Caverns, an underground adventure course weaving through the spectacular slate chambers.

It's an unforgettable day out—whatever the weather outside.

Explore Criccieth Castle

Perfect for: History lovers • Photography

Rain often makes historic places even more atmospheric.

Perched high above Cardigan Bay, Criccieth Castle offers dramatic views and fascinating Welsh history. While you'll want a waterproof jacket, a visit during lighter showers often means you'll have the castle almost to yourself.

Afterwards, warm up with coffee and cake in one of Criccieth's welcoming cafés.

Discover Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw

Perfect for: Art lovers • Relaxed afternoons

Set within beautiful woodland near Llanbedrog, Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw is one of Wales' leading art galleries.

Housed inside a magnificent Victorian Gothic mansion, the gallery hosts changing exhibitions showcasing Welsh artists alongside a lovely café and gift shop.

It's a wonderfully peaceful place to spend a couple of hours.

Enjoy a Long Lunch

Sometimes the best rainy-day plan is simply slowing down.

The Llŷn Peninsula is home to some wonderful restaurants where you can linger over lunch while watching the weather pass outside.

Some of our favourites include:

  • The Potted Lobster
  • Tremfan Hall
  • Zinc
  • The Dining Room

Take your time—there's no rush.

Browse Abersoch's Independent Shops

Abersoch isn't just about beaches.

Spend a leisurely morning browsing independent boutiques, gift shops, homeware stores and delicatessens before stopping for coffee overlooking the harbour.

Even when it's raining, the village has a relaxed atmosphere that's enjoyable to explore.

Visit Plas yn Rhiw

Perfect for: Gardens • History • Heritage

This elegant National Trust manor house provides a fascinating glimpse into Welsh country life.

Explore beautifully preserved interiors before enjoying views across Cardigan Bay from the gardens.

Even on overcast days, it's a wonderfully peaceful place to visit.

Cosy Afternoon at Tyn y Big Estate

Not every rainy day needs an itinerary.

Some of our guests tell us their favourite memories are simply spending time together at the estate.

Light the log burner, settle into the snug with a good book, play board games around the dining table, watch a film together or enjoy a long lunch in the farmhouse kitchen.

Sometimes doing very little turns out to be the perfect holiday.

Visit Portmeirion

Perfect for: Architecture • Photography • Couples

Less than an hour from the estate, Portmeirion feels like stepping into another world.

Designed in an Italian style, its colourful buildings, ornamental gardens and coastal setting make it one of North Wales' most distinctive attractions.

Even beneath dramatic skies, it's an unforgettable place to wander.

Relax, Recharge & Enjoy the View

One of the joys of staying in the countryside is watching the weather become part of the experience.

Pour a coffee, settle into a comfortable chair and simply enjoy the changing landscape through the windows.

Rain clouds drift across the surrounding fields before sunlight suddenly breaks through once again.

Sometimes the simplest moments become the ones you'll remember most.

Travelling with Children?

If little ones are travelling with you, rainy days can still be packed with adventure.

Some of our favourite family-friendly options include:

  • Bounce Below at Zip World
  • Heritage steam trains
  • Board games back at the estate
  • Ice cream and cafés in Abersoch
  • Exploring castles between showers

The weather rarely spoils a family holiday on the Llŷn Peninsula—it simply changes the adventure.
